One hundred and twenty five years ago today, on January 28th 1887, the largest snowflake ever was seen in Ft Keough, Montana. The snowflake measured 15 inches (38 cm) by 8 inches (20cm).
The second biggest snowflake was seen eighty-four years later in Bratsk, Siberia sometime in the winter of 1971, and measured 12 inches (30 cm) by eight inches (20 cm).
